Central Park Mounted Cop Retires

Central Park Mounted Cop Retires

Posted by Aaron Taylor on

You're crying, we're not crying. A recent New York Times piece by Corey Kilgannon celebrated the decade of service given to our great city by NYPD Detective John Reilly and his impeccably-groomed steed, Trooper. The pair have been six-day-a-week fixtures in Central Park for the last ten years, providing a reassuring presence and equine-ambassador tourist thrill come rain or shine. A few weeks ago, they retired, with more than a sprinkle of wistfulness. Their duties will be taken up on a rotating basis by other mounted officers. Read for yourself about their experiences, hijinks and daily gallops on park pathways (sounds divine!)--and be sure to check the comments section for some touching thoughts on the subject as well. We salute you, Detective Reilly and Trooper!
